You're a film studies major at UNCW, right? UNCW is one of the schools I've been thinking about going to for film, but I kind of want to hear a student opinion about it. Is it hard to get into film studies there? Is the focus more about the camera rather than behind the camera? Is it enjoyable at UNCW? Anything would be nice to hear, and thank-you in advance. :)
Yes I am a film major there (just recently actually), and I’d be glad to:
UNCW Film Dept does not take any transfer film credit (that I’m aware of)
Your first semester is FST 200, Intro. You have to make a B- at least. The next semester you take Intro to Production and World Cinema both together. The average GPA from these 3 classes must be a B, and then you are admitted into the film major. Classes aren’t a breeze but def not something you couldn’t handle.
I thought courses here would be more hands-on because I transferred from NCSU and they were mostly theory/criticism, but cutbacks don’t let them teach the cool cinematography/ lighting classes I thought I was gonna do. So fuck me, right? Professors are knowledgeable and since NYU/ UCLA/ AFI all that shit was out of the question for me, I think I picked the best NC school possible. (fuck NC school of the arts, shit is weak son).
UNCW is great and it’s almost a guarantee you’ll love it. Student life/ downtown/ fun stuff/ partying are the SHIT. However it’s not really a “hard” school to get in so there are a lot of dumbasses and a lot of white people, so worldview perspectives of students is somewhat narrowed compared to like NCSU or Chapel Hill, etc.
Myself and some other film major friends of mine quite enjoy your blog. And after surveying the other film animal blogs, I have concluded that filmmajorfox is by far the best.
Keep up the marvelous blogging!
